Go shorties, it was your birthday... yesterday

Thursday 11/1/2007
10:35 a.m.

January 31st must be some sort of bizarre holiday, because there were a lot of freaky people celebrating their birthday yesterday.

- Rob Van Winkle, a.k.a. "Vanilla Ice" (1968)

Oh Vanilla... We all know the can't-get-it-out-of-your-head hit, "Ice, Ice, Baby", but it was Vanilla's stellar performance in the should have been nominated for an Academy award film, Cool as Ice.

Johnny was so cool, well, as cool as ice. And even though he was a total bad ass, he was also a ladies man and wins the heart of Kathy. Awww... such a great film. And what a great soundtrack, especially the duet with Naomi Campbell. Why this didn't win award after award still baffles me. I would normally continue by filling you in on what RVW is doing now, but he's pretty much the same douche he's always been and I don't feel like wasting my time.

Oh, wait. Our nickname for David Silver on Beverly Hills, 90210 was Vanilla Silv. Remember those sweet dance moves he had where he would hold his foot and then jump over it? And that sweet fade haircut - totally Vanilla.

- Adam Keefe Horovitz, a.k.a. Ad-Rock (1966)

Guitarist, musician, rapper, producer, actor... we all know him from the best white hip-hop group in the world, the Beastie Boys. When he's not throwing down beats and spitting mad rhymes, Ad-Rock finds the time to master his acting chops. He can currently be seen in the movie Godspeed
"A speed freak bike messenger who passes as a boy fights the world and his own lust for thrills to win the love of a stripper." Sounds captivating.

"To Jim, speed in its various forms is everything -- a pursuit, a vice, and the thing that courses through his veins. Even though his boss still calls him 'Elizabeth,' Jim loves his bike messenger job, because it enables him to be doing one of his favorite things: going fast. Really fast. The other thing he loves doing is his genius punk star stripper girlfriend, Ally, who keeps critical theory and lube on the nightstand. She'd live in a paper box with him, and Jim has given up speed (in its drug form) to be with her. But when he plays hooky for love and gets fired, addiction calls, and he gambles on the one person who really understands him."

Hopefully this film is out on DVD so I can rent it tonight. I love speed and strippers, so it sounds like my kind of movie.

- Johnny Marr (1963)

Oh how I love the English. Once a guitarist for the Smiths, Marr now kicks it with the boys of Modest Mouse. By the way, Modest Mouse is playing in Indianapolis pretty soon. If any of you readers wants to buy me a ticket to the show, let me know. Just comment: Hey, I want to buy your ticket. Leave me your contact info and we're good to go. Back to Marr.

So, Billy Duffy, guitarist of The Cult, taught Marr how to play the guitar. And in 1982, Marr began writing songs with Morrissey. Soon after, The Smiths were born. From The Smiths' year of inception to the breakup of the band 5 years later in 1987, Marr and Morrissey co-wrote four albums, as well as numerous B-sides and other unreleased songs that eventually appeared on compilations. Still today, the Morrissey-Marr partnership is praised by critics and cited by musicians as one of the most influential songwriting duos of their era.

Following the breakup of The Smith's, Marr toured and recorded with a wide variety of musicians, including: Bryan Ferry, The Pretenders, Kirsty MacColl, Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk, Talking Heads, Black Grape, Billy Bragg, Pet Shop Boys, Beck and Oasis.

In 2006, Marr became an official member of Modest Mouse. Rumour has it that Modest Mouse had put out the word that they were looking for a "Johnny Marr-esque guitarist", and bemusingly, Johnny Marr was one of the people who answered the call, and so, got the job. He wrote some of the songs with lead singer Isaac Brock on their new album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, in addition to being featured on guitar. Marr is currently touring with the band. The new album reached number 1 on the American Billboard charts in late March 2007. For Marr this is the first time he has had a number one record in the U.S.

Marr is currently delivering a series of workshops and master classes to students on the BA Popular Music and Recording degree at Salford University.

- Sally Kirland (1934)

Now this ho is a freak. Sals began acting Off-Broadway in 1962, and has been said to have been the first actress to show her goods on stage, in a 1968 production of Sweet Eros. After several small roles in such films as The Sting, The Way We Were, A Star Is Born, JFK, and Private Benjamin, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1987 for Anna and won the Golden Globe that year for Best Actress.

She has had a highly successful and varied career, having appeared in nearly 150 films. Many of you may remember her from the best daytime television show ever created, Days of Our Lives. She played Ed's mother in Edtv and acted in the romantic comedy The Last Guy on Earth, (2006) and with Nick Nolte in Off The Black, and several other films, including Adam and Steve (2006) Coffee Date (2007) and was also a special guest on The Simple Life 5: Goes to Camp (2007).

Mustang Sally is now a minister in the Church of The Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness. I did a little research on this church and I'm thinking of becoming a member. MSIA teaches what they call "Soul Transcendence". You basically become aware of yourself as a "Soul" and as one with God. They want you to focus on how to incorporate spirituality into your everyday life, "practical spirituality." When I go home for lunch today, the first thing I'm going to do is meditate for attuning to the highest consciousness. Om...om...om...
This freak is the founder:

Salacious is also an artist and teaches yoga, meditation and drama. She's also a health nut and founded the Kirkland Institute for Implant Survival Syndrome. Last year she joined the grandson of Mahatma Gandi (oddly enough, Indira Ghandi died on Halloween, weird) in marching for Peace in L.A. In January 2006, on the deathbed of her Godmother, Shelley Winters, she performed a spiritual marriage as a last wish of Winters.

Spiritual marriage comes from the idea of "love without sex." It is a practice in which a man and a woman live intimately without having any sexual relationship. It is been known throughout all cultures as a bond of a man and a woman with its only reason being the spiritual connection between the two and nothing more. Spiritual marriage is the ultimate singular relationship. So yeah, she performed this on her Godmother's death bed. Draw your own conclusions.
